Prague FAQ |
Does anyone in Prague speak English or any other language?
Most Czech people, especially those in touristic areas, speak enough English to give you what you need and many speak it fluently. German and Russian are commonly spoken, especially amongst older Czechs and sometimes other languages. English is becoming recognized as the standard and Czechs are learning it to keep up. As always, when travelling, try to speak clearly and slowly.
Are Czech taxis safe or are they, as I've heard, all sharks?
There are plenty of safe taxis but it pays to be aware that they will take advantage of you and charge as much as they can. Try to avoid flagging down taxis in the street, especially in touristic areas. Try and set the price before getting in, and don't fight if the situation becomes threatening. All drivers should use their meters, if they do not, they are definitely trying to rip you off. We recommend AAA taxis which can be called at tel: 14014 or City Taxi on 257257257.
Can I buy international newspapers and magazines in Prague?
Wenceslas square is the place for German, English and French newspapers and magazines. There are also now a number of Relay newsagents dotted around the city which sell international publications. The Prague Post, an American newspaper published in Prague, will give you all the latest in news, business and entertainment and can be purchased at most news stands.
Can I smoke in restaurants? In the Czech Republic, there is not a restriction on smoking. In some cafes and restaurants, however, smoking is forbidden. Look for signs inside.
Could you please tell me whether Mastercard & Visa credit cards are accepted in Prague?
Most Prague establishments, and certainly hotels, accept all major credit cards.
Is it possible to withdraw cash from Czech ATMs/cash machines? If you have a Cirrus sign on your card then you will certainly be able to do so. There are plenty of ATMs dotted around the center.
